Retail Crime, Wardrobing & Shrinkages
Retail security is still one of the most serious problems facing high street superstores and retail chains today. According to a 2022 national study from BRC, research indicated that retail crime has cost the retail industry over £1.5 billion. This included nearly £715 million for crime prevention and nearly £786 million losses to crime itself, including £663 million to customer theft. This is significantly lower than the previous year due to national lockdowns where fewer shops were open. Effectively, for every £1 lost to crime, retailers spent £1 on crime prevention.
Internal theft, shoplifting and organized retail crime can have a crippling effect on retailers’ profit margins. This leads to lower quality work environments for employees as well an unpleasant shopping experience that will turn customers away from your store forever!
To keep their bottom lines intact, retailers need to take action against the increasing volume of returns. A recent study from Openpay calculated that items bought online and returned in Great Britain are worth £5 billion annually- with a significant amount going back onto consumers’ hands instead of being processed by the companies. Openpay’s research showed an average cost per transaction at almost twice as much to return than deliver the item.
‘Wardrobing’ is a growing phenomenon in which shoppers buy clothes, shoes and other items with the intention of using or wearing them before returning them to retailer. The average cost price range was £40 -£70 per item returned. These alarming stats would indicate that at least a fifth of retail shoppers are returning items after using them. This would account for over £1 billion in costs to online retailers from ‘wardrobing’ consumers.
The ‘wardrobing’ crisis has been going on for some time now, and it seems like major retailers are catching up with how consumers can be handled. ASOS was one of the first companies to publicly address this issue by ‘blacklisting’ customers who have committed ‘legal shoplifting.’ For this to be effective enough and prevent future purchases every account would have to be deactivated after every single theft!
The retail industry is always looking for ways to keep customers and manage margins. One way that retail chains have done this in recent years was by implementing a security tag system on popular items so people can’t remove them without removing the tags first. With this tagging system in place, any attempt to stop people wearing items once or twice and returning them for a refund, the retailer refuses to process returns if the label has been removed.
Retailers need a security solution that is flexible enough to fit their individual needs. A retailer could have one product for packing and securing items on shelves, another designed specifically around theft prevention measures such as cameras or sensors while still others may focus more exclusively towards protecting fixtures from tampering with seals – all of which come at different price points so they can be tailored according retailers’ budget requirements!
